WP3 Bioresearch Interface

This WP deals with creating interfaces between Scientists and Ethicists. The EMBO Science & Society is the main proposed and organizer. Andrew Moore describes EMBO, whose mission is to promote Molecular Biology in Europe, through meetings, courses, publications, fellowships and, which since 1996-97 has a “Science and Society” section which provides exchanges with the non-scientific community.

That’s why EMBO role in Biotethed could be to promote interdisciplinary encounters between professional ethicists and practising life scientists.

Moore proposes to the group to use EMBO agenda of conferences to let Biotethed people speak about bioethics, according to EMBO philosophy which prefers physical encounters to e-mail contacts. The contribution at the meeting is in the appendix. Here Andrew Moore summarize the list of the three EMBO meetings where a special session on BioTEthics will be introduced:

- Common Molecular Mechanisms of Mammary Gland Development and Breast Cancer Progression, University College Dublin, Ireland, 6 – 8 June.

- EMBO Workshop in plant virology: Suppression and Circumvention of Host Defence by Plant Viruses, Haikko Manor Hotel, Helsinki, Finland, 1 – 5 July.

- Bacterial networks: Joining the strengths of structural and systems biology to reach “synthetic” biology, San Feliu de Guixols, Spain, 2 – 7 September.

Before the release of the present minutes Andrew Moore has communicated the following modification of the list of EMBO meetings that will host a special session on Biotethed.
