1. Deputy Director of The Sheffield Institute of Biotechnological Law and Ethics

Served as an Elected Member of the Senate, Council, Academic Development Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Standing Committee of the Senate and numerous other Committees of the University - Had responsibility for 1. All building used in the Scientific and Medical Faculties of the University (1986 “ 1991) and 2. All New Courses (Degree and Otherwise) introduced In the Curriculum in the University of Sheffield (1986-1991)
3. Had significant responsibility for the administration of teaching and examining within the School of Biology in the University.
4. Chair of the Board of Governors of 2 secondary schools (11-18) in Sheffield during the 1980s and served as a Governor for 2 other schools , As chair I had executive responsibility, especially for the School Budget, but was not responsible for day-to-day running of the Schools.
5. Served as an elected member of the National Executive of the Association of University Teachers in the UK. (1980-1986) and as Committee Member and President of the Association of University Teachers in Sheffield (1980 “ 1996)
6. Currently Secretary of the International Society for Biosafety Research
7. Chairman-elect of the Public Perception Working Group of the European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB)
8. Am the Specialist adviser to the UNEP “ GEF projects that are working in nearly 140 developing countries in relation to the development of Biosafety Frameworks pursuant to the Cartagena Protocol and to Article 8(g) of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Achievements
Member of the UK Advisory Committee on Genetic Modification (1983-2003), including its Technical Sub-Committee (inception to 2003) and the Intentional Introduction Sub-committee before the formation of ACRE. After 1990 ACGM was primarily involved with the contained use of GMOs
Member of the UK Advisory Committee on Releases into the Environment (Inception in 1990 to 1999). This committee dealt with the deliberate release of Genetically Modified organisms into the Environment.
As part of my Work in Biochemistry, developed technical skills in programming and maintenance of computer equipment to a very high level. Experience in Programming in C, C++, Java and Visual Basic.

Staff
Dr Mike Adcock is the project co-ordinator for Bioethics-Today, a web-based resource on bioethics aimed at all those who have an interest in ethical, legal and social aspects of biotechnology. He has worked on a Department of Health, UK funded project entitled "Intellectual Property Rights and Genetics" which looked into the impact and management of intellectual property rights within the healthcare sector. He was the project co-ordinator on the recent Plant Intellectual Property (PIP) project whose main aim was to assess the attitudes towards plant intellectual property protection from within the European plant breeding industry and to examine whether the existing European plant intellectual property provision provided a coherent and consistent framework of protection which is both effective and appropriate in meeting the industries needs.

SIBLE aims to be an inter-disciplinary forum for the discussion of ethical and legal issues raised by developments in biotechnology; to encourage and carry out research, particularly inter-disciplinary research, on ethical and legal issues raised by developments in biotechnology; to provide a supportive environment for research degrees on ethical and legal issues of biotechnology, and for other courses on law and ethics in relation to biotechnology; to offer expert advice on law and ethics to those researching and developing biotechnology; and to counsel governments and other regulatory bodies on the regulation of biotechnology.
