Franco Celada Coordinator of the project
HD, PhD, Professor of Immunology, University of Genoa, Adj. Professor of Pathology NYU, New York.
Born and educated in Milan; his research carrier in Immunology, basic and theoretical developed in France, Italy, United States (12 years in 3 periods), Sweden (7 years). He is an authority on cell-cell communication in the Immune system, in antibodydetermined conformation of proteins, and in the computer modelling of the immune responses.
Besides laboratory research and Immunology teaching, Franco Celada became interested in International Interdisciplinary and Education at the University, and played a number of roles in well-known organisations.
1975–85 Member of the Course Committee of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) (Courses organized in person, 4)
1987–93 Chairman, Education Committee, International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) (coordinator of Courses in Costa Rica, India (2), Hungary, Rumania).
1993–2003 Co-Founder and Secretary General (at present V.P.) of European Association for Higher Education in Biotechnology.
The article in Bambed (in annex) explains the motivations and the activities of HeduBT, and, also how – to provide and adequate education in Biotechnology ethics to EDBT candidate Franco Celada initiated BioTEthics by engaging 13 groups of Bioethicist in 11 European countries. This Strategy action focus on research and definition of Biotechnology (as a partially distinct discipline from Bioethics) and on interactive teaching and discussion.
BioTEthics produced courses in Versailles and Portofino and theoretical advances documented in publications and in the final conference to be held in April in Maastricht.
The same coordinator, and most of the partners of BioTEthics have proposed Biotethed which will continue and expand the efforts towards the new member States and by building up a lively relationship between biological scientists and ethicist.
