Doctor of Laws and Doctor of Medicine. Professor in Criminal Law (University of
the Basque Country) and Head of the Inter-University Chair BBVA Foundation -
Provincial Government of Biscay in Law and the Human Genome, Universities of
Deusto and of The Basque Country. He is currently a member of the Spanish
National Commission for Assisted Human Reproduction and of the Adviser
Committee on Ethics of Research in Science and Technology to the Spanish
Government. He has directed several research projects, some of them on behalf
of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee of the Spanish Ministry of
Education and Science, the Government of the Canary Islands, the Spanish
Ministry of Health and Consumption and the Council of Europe, several of them
currently in progress. He has been author of the first draft of the current Spanish
Law on Transplantation of Organs, passed by the Spanish Parliament in 1979,
and he has also collaborated with regard to these matters with the Spanish
Ministry of Health and Consumption on several occasions. He has published a
grate number of books and articles referring penal Law, Law and Medicine, and
Law and Genome.
Achievements Several theses in the framework of the Interuniversity Chair, related to the juridical issues of medicine and genetics. Publication of the Law and the Human Genome Review (numbers 1-20) and 14 monographies. Annual workshops for experts and seminars for students are organised. Courses “ optional or free-choice “ which lead to the qualification of Graduate in Law, in Biology, in Biochemistry and other areas, entitled "The Genome in relation to the Law, "Bioethics and the Law in regard to the Human Genome" and "Law and Bioethics".
