Achievements
Building of the EMBO Science & Society Programme: this Programme started in 1999 with the appointment of Andrew Moore as manager. In 5 years, and with a very professional member of administrative staff, it has grown to be acknowledged as a substantial player in the area of science & society in Europe, and particularly in the area of international teachers workshops. A hitherto absent feature of biology education in Europe is a platform for international exchange: the EMBO teachers workshops establish this for the first time in Europe. The Science & Society Programme also organises a well-respected annual conference (in collaboration with the EMBL), which has established itself as a corner-stone event in the annual calendar of events across Europe. From 2002 to 2004 it has developed a Communication Award for life scientists, whose winners are nominated for, and are strong candidates in the EC‘s new Descartes Prize for Science Communication.
